Building a Strong Core: Keys to Pilates Studio Success in a Competitive Market

Updated: Jan 31

In the world of Pilates, a strong core is more than just the foundation for a powerful body. It’s a metaphor for the vitality of a thriving business. You see, just like in Pilates, running a successful studio in a competitive market requires a robust 'core'— that unique set of values and strategies that sets your business apart.

When the competition gets fierce and your studio is twisting and turning through the complexities of the market, your 'business core' is what will keep you balanced and resilient. But how do you build this core? Well, let's do some metaphorical Pilates with some terrible puns included to keep you entertained!

Know your unique selling proposition (USP)

Just like each individual has a unique body and fitness journey, each Pilates studio has its own unique identity. What’s your USP? Maybe it's your expert trainers, maybe it's your state-of-the-art facilities, or perhaps it's your exceptional client service. This is the cornerstone of your business core. Understanding and emphasizing your USP can help you stand out in a crowded market. Remember it's what you can say that others can't say that makes you unique. My advice is to focus on being different. And if your answer is that all Pilates studios are pretty much the same then you have some reflecting to do here as you are offering something or a multiple of things combined that sets you apart....Time to figure this out!

Invest in Your Team

A high-quality team of instructors and support staff are the 'muscles' that surround and support your business core. As a studio owner, investing in your team - whether through continuing education, competitive salaries, or creating a positive work environment - is vital. It fosters loyalty and enhances the client experience. Remember, a happy team results in happy clients! As the market heats up and great instructors are becoming rarer finds, a major focus we are seeing with clients this year is instructor retention and putting detailed plans in place to keep them loyal to the business.

Prioritize Client Retention

In the fitness industry, new clients are fantastic—but existing clients are golden. Retaining clients helps in building a loyal community around your studio. Regular client engagement, personalized attention, and exciting reward programs can make your clients feel valued, encouraging them to stick around. With proven strategies you can add 20-40% in additional revenue per client per annum by focusing on client retention and maximising their experience within your studio.

Stay on Top of Trends

Our world is evolving faster than a Pilates reformer on a spring day (forgive me for that one!). Be it advancements in technology, new marketing strategies, or changes in customer preferences, it's important to stay informed. Adopting relevant trends not only boosts your studio’s appeal but also keeps you ahead of your competition.

Maintain Financial Fitness

Just as you wouldn’t ignore a persistent muscle strain, don’t overlook your studio's financial health. Keep an eye on your income, expenses, and investments, and consider working with a financial advisor, if needed. After all, a financially fit studio is a sustainable one. The biggest challenge I've seen here is cash flow and having appropriate cash in the bank to sustain the business during a bump or otherwise in the road. Experience has taught me that financial planning doesn't always come easy to small Business Owners and it takes some time to get clients engaged with their numbers but when they do and they start seeing positive trends suddenly they enjoy the process. Start small get basic tracking in place, invest in software (Zero, Quickbooks) to make life easier for you.

Connect with the Community

Your studio isn’t just a business, it's a part of the community. Engaging with local events, collaborating with other businesses, and being socially responsible can enhance your studio's reputation, and help you attract clients who value a sense of community.

Remember, much like the satisfaction of nailing a perfect Teaser, building a successful Pilates studio doesn't come overnight. But with consistency, a strong 'business core', and a dash of (bad in my case ;-)) humour, you'll find your studio well-balanced and flourishing amidst the competition. Now, roll out your business mat, and let's get to work!
